PUBLIC NETWORK SOLUTION 1 - Public Internet Access Services

Since IEEE 802.1x defines a standard way for authenticating users, it's easier for ISPs providing IEEE 802.11-based Internet access services in public places like airports, coffee shops, restaurants, hospital and hotels, to deploy interoperable wireless networks. This will definitely expedite the adoption of IEEE 802.11 as a medium for public Internet access services. In addition, Microsoft's Windows XP and Windows CE.Net already have built-in support for IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.1x. Therefore, it will soon become a common life style to use a notebook computer or a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to surf the Internet wirelessly in public places.


PUBLIC NETWORK SOLUTION 2- User Authenticated Access

Approach 2 is an alternative for deploying public WLANs in hotspots. This approach achieves wireless user authentication based on the Web redirection technology instead of IEEE 802.1x. When an unauthenticated wireless user is trying to access a Web page, a logon page is shown instead of the requested page, so that the user can type his/her user name and password for authentication. Then, the user credential information is sent by the WLAN access gateway to a back-end RADIUS (Remote Authentication User Dial-In Service) server to see if the wireless user is allowed to access the Internet.
